Pleasing Aroma

Ken Silva

Scripture

2 Corinthians 2: 14But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

Observation

In this passage of scripture Paul is on a trip from Ephesus to Philippi to meet up with his trusted companion Titus. Paul uses the word aroma to teach us how to be the fragrance of Christ to those around us.

Application

I find it interesting that Paul uses the word aroma because the sense of smell is such a powerful force in bringing back memories. I can remember my grandmother’s house on the weekends. She would bake fresh bread for my sister and I. The memories of the smell of the bread baking bring back vivid memories of my grandmother and her unconditional love and support for me and my sister. I wonder what aroma I give off to those around me. Not a body odor kind of smell, but rather the smell of Christ. To live a my life as the aroma of Christ.

We are the aroma of Christ when our lives “smell” of service. Service may be the little things like words of encouragement to someone that’s having a rough day. It may be taking the time to sit with someone that needs an ear to help process relationship issues. It may be giving a friend a ride when their car breaks down. It’s more of what we do than what we say that displays God’s love, his aroma, working in our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord help me to be an example of you. Help me to be a pleasing aroma, a fragrant offering that leads people to the cross. Father I love you and thank you for loving me. Amen.
