The Law of the Land
John TiltonPhilippians 2:3-4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Paul spoke to the Philippian people about the humble attributes of Christ Jesus; this one in particular about “self” and one’s propensity to seek personal gain over others. He points out very clearly that one should value others above and before one’s self, putting others interests before one’s self.
The reality of the matter is that its easier said then done and often so subtle in terms of how “self” and personal gain takes place and priority in our lives and what we actually do. I recall my mom telling me the golden rule, “The law of the land is self-preservation.” She was so right about the natural tendency to put ourselves first. I often find myself naturally pondering how a situation might benefit my interests, and consequently naturally acting out or doing what would benefit me, often justifying my actions. What is wrong with being the beneficiary if it doesn’t outright hurt someone or cause ill will or harm … right? It’s often in the shadows of my decision-making and actions that I put myself before others. These scriptures are a great reminder that if I want to walk my talk of who I am in Christ and as a leader, my processing of situations before I speak and act should be mindful of others. I love that acronym of WWJD … what would Jesus do?
Dear Lord, thank you for reminding me of Christ’s many attributes and in particular … self. May I be cognizant to be mindful of others as I use the filter of WWJD.
