Jeff WeinkaufJohn 16:23
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
I’ll be honest I like to be in the know, to know what’s going on when it’s going on etc. I think it’s because I’m also a planner. A person who thinks about contingencies and back ups. Recently I’ve noticed the same thing about my daughter. Like her dad, she’s most at peace when she can forecast what’s coming.
I think Jesus may have been thinking of people like us when He spoke the words of John 16:23. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.” For me, having that perspective on the big plan equals peace. I know the verse is not only about comfort for me, like so many things God does it has different parts, and impacts each of us both generally and also very personally. Here’s what’s coming, I’m telling you so you can have peace, it’s all going to be ok because I got this. (Jeff paraphrase). I observe Jesus cares about information hounds and planners.
The application to me is simple, knowing what’s coming I must trust in the one who told me about it and rest in His love. At times there’s going to be trouble, do I know so that I can avoid the trouble? Maybe, but most likely not. More that when it comes I’ll rest in Jesus. Ultimately it’s a victory song. Yes it will be hard sometimes, but it’s ok because I got this. Jesus says plainly I have (past tense) already (it is finished) overcome the world. In knowing that ultimate outcome I can take comfort.
Thank you Lord for having mercy on me. Thank you for showing me that in the end you have all in hand. Help me to live in light of that and to rest in your peace. Amen
