More Than Confession

Calvin Kochi

Scripture

1John1:8-9

8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness

Observation

How clear and simple these verses are. If we claim to be without sin or we claim to be good or have it all together then we are deceiving ourselves. I believe that there is a lot of us deceive, because if we say that we are not deceived then the truth is not in us. The truth is we all fall short. The biggest weapon the enemy has over us is deception. He tempts us with sin that is wrapped in the most beautiful packaging so that we want to open it Yet there lying wrapped in that beautiful package is the very thing that can destroy you and others. I notice that the enemy stalks his prey to wound so that other get pulled in the battle.

Application

The answer is also quite clear. If we confess our sin he is faithful and just to forgive us and to purify us for all the mistakes we made. But I think that confession alone is only part of it, because without true repentance we will end up still going in the same direction. Repentance is going in the opposite direction and the changing of our minds to flee from those sins. If all we did was confessed it makes it easier to go back to the same struggles. True confession must include repentance (Godly sorrow) and a sincere heart to change.

Prayer

Lord help me to be honest about how I see myself. Help me to recognize the areas of sin so that I can quickly come to seek your forgiveness and to confess of my sin. Help me to come to a place of true repentance. I know that you are faithful, help me to live in faithfulness.
