Bridle My Bad

John Tilton

Scripture

James 1:19-20

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Observation

This is one of my favorite scriptures that implores and cautions us to listen before we speak, which I believe includes listening then thinking before we speak. The scriptures go on to tie in the lack of listening to the ramification of an angry spirit setting in, probably due to a lack of understanding.

Application

I know that I at times will feel anger in situations; that I realize if only I would have given the situation more time to enable me to contemplate what is taking place, before I speak. It’s like a bridling a horse that one would have more control. So to do we need to bridle our speech, so that we have more control over our emotions and actions. Listening to hear all, and taking time to process what took place and what was said, does not diminish success.

Prayer

Dear Lord – please bind and bridle my mouth when need be, in order to savor and think through my response.
