Look Among the Nations

John Danganan

Scripture

“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Hab. 1:5

Observation

The prophet Habakkuk complained to God and questions as to how long will he continue to cry for help and see injustice in Judah. God answers and instructs Habakkuk to look among the nations because He is doing a work. God is not only the God of Israel but He is the God of the nations—He is God over all the earth. Habakkuk is to look, see, wonder and be astounded at God’s work among the nations. Even though Habakkuk is disappointed at the rise of the Chaldeans, God could have raised any nation. Fill in the blank—Babylon, Persia, Rome, Greece— God is at work among the nations.

Application

I think with the election coming up and the focus in revitalizing America in the glory of her greatness, I have become more ethnocentric and questioned God like Habakuk. Yet God is the God of the nations and is doing amazing things among the nations. I need to move beyond myself and trust God who works all things for His glory. Have the same resolution as Habakkuk to rejoice in God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for being a gracious and compassionate God. Please forgive my selfishness and not recognizing your work among the nations. May I have the same resolve as Habakkuk (3:17-19),
"Though the fig tree should not blossom,
nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
and there be no herd in the stalls,
18yet I will rejoice in theLord;
I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
19God, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the deer's;
he makes metread on myhigh places."
Amen
