The Glory of God Gives it Light

Tim Savage

Scripture

2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. Revelation 21

Observation

I am always in awe of the description of the Holy City. It’s such a powerful reminder of the infinite power of God because the city itself is unlike anything on earth or anything we can even imagine, but the physical surroundings are just a minor detail in the entire experience of spending eternity with the Master Creator. I love that there will be no temples or churches, no sun nor moon, people will worship in all places, at all times and the glory of God is the eternal light. My mind cannot comprehend the majesty of His presence where physics, science and the physical laws of our world have no dominion over Him. I live in the anticipation of no more death, mourning, crying and pain – a life perfected by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ made available to me, not by my performance or efforts, but because He loves me and I simply accept the gift.

Application

I must continue to live my life as a sacrifice for Him. I have to daily correct back to Him because the draw of the world and its temptations constantly pound on me clouding my vision and judgment. There is nothing I could do that is more important than serving Him and giving Him what little I have to offer in talents and skill. The truth is, it’s not a sacrifice because He could choose anyone to serve Him, but for some reason He chose me and it’s an honor higher than anything the world can offer. When I feel discouraged or unappreciated I have to remember that the enemy is manipulating my mind and perception. God is in control and when I simply ‘let go and let God’ His perfect plan is revealed. Of course, His plan is revealed slowly – little by little – giving me only as much as I need at that time because I couldn’t handle any more. My faith would diminish and my pride would swell because I am weak without Him, so I must stay faithful and follow His lead, patiently waiting for God doors to open and all others to close.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for a glimpse in to Heaven and eternity with You. Thank You for choosing me to serve You. Forgive me when I stray and impatiently try to make my own way, help me discern Your will and represent You well.

In Jesus name,

Amen
