Quelling Your Storms

John Tilton

Scripture

Matthew 8:23-26 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Observation

As we read, in the eye of the storm, the disciples let the apparent physical occurrences and appearance of what was taking place cause them to conclude what they thought would be the probable cause and affect of doom or peril ahead; not remembering or realizing who was with them … Jesus! We subsequently read that Jesus rebuked the winds and the waves to a calmness that ensued.

Application

I realize that in addition to the storms that had come my way, I often also let circumstances conjure up storms in my life. The storms often become seemingly overwhelming resulting in my propensity to try and handle matters on my own, all the while worrying and stressing. Then … reading God’s word, I an reminded and realize that Jesus can calm and quell the storms that arrive in my life and even the storms that I may tend to conjure up, placing circumstances and storms in His hands. I need to be intentional in how I address, then quell and calm the storms in my life.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for being the formidable factor in quelling the storms in my life as I turn to you in prayer, learning from you word and trusting in you.
