Paving the Way
John TiltonLuke 7:24-28
After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
What an esteemed call for John to be the messenger that would precede Jesus and pave the way for the greatest plan of God. Yet, as esteemed a call as it was, the position held no grand benefits or riches, but rather the simplicity of life and provision. It would be in the generations to come that as Jesus would state, there would be none known to be greater than John, who took the call on his life with humility and a life of commonality; no benefits or riches, but yet rich in his calling and assignment.
I guess it is a natural human and carnal instinct to seek and be enthralled with position, benefits and usually riches in one’s career or calling. People assume that success; position, benefits and riches all come together. Yet, I am reminded of a few great people who serve rather then seek to be served, give rather then seek to receive and fill others’ cups rather then holding out their own to be filled. This definitely was the call and example of John as he paved the way for Jesus. I am thankful and affirmed that when there are situations where I must decrease so that other’s would increase, or that I may need to step back so others may step forward; that I would not let my pride cause me consternation. May I continue to understand and be good with being of the platform and instead in the wings if that is the call and assignment for me. May I then know my call to coach, encourage, support and applaud. I will be less that others may be more.
Dear Lord, thank you for giving me keen insight that quells and suppresses by pride so as to allow me to be like a John the Baptist, paving the way for others that are called and decreasing so that others can increase.
