No gumble be humble

Ken Silva

Scripture

Numbers 21: 8The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

Observation

In Numbers 21 we get yet another example of the Israelites getting discouraged and grumbling against Moses and God for leading them into the wilderness. The reason that they were wandering in the wilderness was due to their own sin. They had forgotten that and focused the blame on Moses. In judgment against the people the Lord sent poisonous snakes into the camp and many people died. Only then did the people acknowledge that they were the ones in sin, confess it to Moses and ask for God’s mercy. God instructed Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole so the people could be healed.

Application

The bronze image was a part of the Lord’s plan to teach the Israelites about faith. The bronze snake on a pole had no power, it was just an inanimate object. It was the faith, the belief of the people that God provided this object for healing. When the snake on the staff was viewed by the people it was a reminder of their sin and the suffering that ensued because of their sin.

Many times in my life I grumble about this or that. Often it is when I do stupid things and find myself far from God. I’m just so thankful that the father loves me unconditionally. He welcomes me with open arms when I acknowledge my sin and repent of them. He offers me a way home no matter how “lolo” I am.

Prayer

Dear Lord thank you for who you are and for loving me in spite of my foolishness. Thank you for providing a way back to you when I stray. Dear Lord I lift you up and thank you again for everything you do in my life and the lives of those around me. Amen
