The fountain of living water

Ken Silva

Scripture

John 4:13-14

Jesus answered, "everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Observation

The exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan women is significant. As a Rabbi he wasn't supposed to speak to a Samaritan without being judged by his fellow jews. To compound matters he openly speaks to a Samaritan women who was known as an adulteress. Jesus had no fear of being judged or his reputation being sullied. Jesus disregarded Jewish custom to show that no one is barred from God's love and the hope of salvation. The only barrier to redemption is our "self". The pride or worldlyness that may hold us back from throwing our hearts over the line for Crist.

Application

As I read this passage of scripture I couldn't help but reflect upon my own life. I admit there was a time when I judged my success, hapiness and self worth by what i had (my possessions). I was caught up in the cycle of acquiring more because I thought that would make me happier. I worked long days and felt I was on an unending cycle of "earn, spend, earn more to spend more". When I became a Christian I began to see life in a different light. Happiness wasn't "things", it was a contentment that can only be found in the love of Christ. The water Jesus spoke of above symbolizes the Holy Spirit and his work in recreating us in God's image and sustaining in us the new life which comes from God.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus thank you for quenching my thirst with your Holy Spirit. Thank you for living in my life, may I always be refreshed by you and seek your will in my life. Amen.
