Obedience Over Reason

John Tilton

Scripture

Luke 5:4-5 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. ”But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.

Observation

Simon and the others fishing had spent all night fishing and caught nothing. However, when Jesus instructed them to go out into the deeper waters and let down their nets in order to catch fish, Simon responded with a willing and obedient yes. First, I noted that Jesus didn’t say to see if you’ll catch fish, but rather, you will catch fish. Jesus knew what the outcome would be and probably meant more faith and obedience by Simon knowing that Jesus said you will catch! Second, reason by Simon would be understandable that if no fish were caught all night, catching fish by going deeper to let down one’s net is not the usual solution for fishing. Yet, Simon followed because of Jesus’ word.

Application

I consider myself a person of reason and review in matters considering what the information and facts are, as well as the probabilities. These scriptures prompt me to be mindful that with Jesus and His word, reason can often take a back seat, and therefore obedience, discipline and being able discern Jesus speaking through His word is so important. I would surmise that obedience can and is a gesture to Jesus of our obedience and therefore can often be perhaps the reason we see results that surpass our understanding.

Prayer

Dear Lord, my desire will be to spend more time in your word that I will be able to better hear your voice and know your will, that when needed, I will go forth with obedience rather then reason. May my reason be a guide to understand and place your will in the right perspective.
