Wisdom is Not Enough
Tim Savage29God gave Solomon very great wisdom and understanding, and knowledge as vast as the sands of the seashore. 1 Kings 4
God was very pleased with Solomon’s choice of wisdom as his gift. So pleased, in fact, that He granted him wealth, power and peace in addition to wisdom. Solomon was the wisest man in history, but when you fast forward to the end of his life it’s shocking to find that he became frustrated and disillusioned and died joyless and unhappy. I’ve always thought that wisdom is inspired by the Holy Spirit, that they are integrally intertwined. Solomon’s life is evidence that being wise doesn’t mean you make good decisions. Where was the disconnect in his life? His reign started so well but ended so poorly.
Solomon was wise, the wisest ever, but at some point he gave in to his fleshly and worldly desires, married many women from foreign kingdoms and lost God’s anointing. I pray for wisdom and discernment, but I realize now that that is not enough. I also need an eternal love for God and the courage and fortitude to follow the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Solomon’s is a morality tale of being blessed with the most valuable gift, then squandering it and ending up with deep regret. My prayer from now on will not be for wisdom exclusively, but for wisdom and the desire to follow the instruction and direction of my Lord and Savior.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Please grant me wisdom and discernment, but also an unquenchable desire to please You and follow the path You want for me.
