To the “Mature Christian” first
Rod ShimabukuroThere will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, [10]but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. [11]For God shows no partiality. Romans 2:9-11
Douglas Moo writes in Encountering the Book of Romans: Romans, though thoroughly theological, is no textbook on doctrine. It is a letter—written by a particular person to particular people in a particular time and place.
Paul addresses the Jews conflict with the Gentiles in the church. Can you blame the Jews for being so passionate and yet territorial about their beliefs? Carrying out the law and their bent towards works was infused in their life blood. Paul begins to call the Jews out firmly addressing their hypocrisy in teaching but not living out the Gospel.
One observation I noticed is Paul’s writing - to the Jew first and also the Greek. He addresses his very own first - the Jews, appealing on the basis of his identity as a Jew. Earlier in his letter, Paul writes: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)
In today’s church, I want to address, equip, challenge the Christians first, who have been around a while. The ones who have “been around the church” longer should know better - about making wiser choices and how they love out their faith before others.
Without sounding like I’m being harsh or judging, Christians who have been around the church - who have been “saved” for a while are living such hypocritical lives! It’s not just the “SIN they are committing” that gets me. It’s the willful ignorance and rebellion of living self centered, selfish lives! I have some non Christian friends and what’s the difference in character qualities - as I compare some Christians with my non Christian friends?
And Yes... I too am a hypocrite at times. But I will speak out, in love to confront these “more mature” Christians, who are struggling with their identity in Jesus - living double standard lives. In love, I will guide, teach and shepherd these with the truth.
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for dying for ALL of my sins. Thank you for not being partial when it comes to people - all of Your created beings! Thank you for loving me and making me feel so loved. May I do likewise to the Christians first, no matter their maturity, issues, sins... Help me to love and teach - as You would!
