Speak Through Me Lord

John Tilton

Scripture

Acts 6:8-10

Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signsamong the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyreneand Alexandria as well as the provinces of Ciliciaand Asia—who began to argue with Stephen. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

Observation

As Stephen was called, chosen and led by God, God enabled him to do great things amongst the people. Yet, as we read, an opposition arose due to a difference of opinion, most probably in terms of their beliefs as Libertines. The Holy Spirit continued to speak through Stephen with wisdom.

Application

I recently was in a “Question & Answer” situation of a presentation, and was asked questions that were sensitive and potentially conflicting in nature. In what we sometimes refer to as “nano-seconds” of feeling compelled to answer with wisdom, I grabbed onto the best answer of information and facts that came to mind. I later thought that I could have worded my answer even better if I had known what to expect in terms of the question. I wish I had read these scriptures prior, and therefore to have prayed prior to the situation to ask the Holy Spirit to guide me and speak through me. I know that my responses would have been better than my calling on my own intellect and fact, which at times I know can be hasty and a knee-jerk response. Perhaps a pause, or a repeat of the question to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to me would have been so good in hindsight. Well, lesson learned for the future.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for continuously seeding into me with the nuances that can even help me on a day-to-day basis to be led by the Holy Spirit when I speak. I know that the position you’ve given me will place me in many situations of opportunity to speak of matters at hand. Yet, I realize that it is in those situations that I desire and ask that you speak through me.
