Name it, Claim it. Request it, Receive it.

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel. Joshua 14:14

Observation

The inheritance given to Caleb was because he wholly followed the Lord. Caleb had requested the land he desired (Hebron). The decision to allot and pass out inheritances belonged to Joshua. From 14:6, Caleb unpacks his reasoning for possessing and inheriting the land requested. He seems to convincingly, fearlessly and confidently state his case before Joshua. He basically says, I had faith and strength when I was 40 - and 45 years later at age 85, I am just as strong and healthy to conquer enemies.

I want to be careful not to over exaggerate the text. I think because I’ve experienced counseling so many Christians who have a happy-healthy-wealthy hope for their future, I’m sensitive to people “claiming, and desiring a positive inheritance.” So many of us want to claim our inheritance without wholly following the Lord. We want to promises of God more than the God of promises.

Application

Today, I am aware that I want to grow in faith, trust - believing the Lord’s promises in areas of provision, finances, healing emotional, spiritual and physical sicknesses.

I am equally aware that I deeply - deeply desire to live for, believe in and love God wholly, with all my heart, soul, mind and strength! There are tons of promises and inheritances I would like to name, claim - request and receive. But more than anything, I want to wholly love and live for the Lord.

Prayer

Dear Jesus my Lord.
Would you be Lord of our finances, material possessions, dreams, pursuits, wants and prayers. May I have a heart that deeply loves you. A heart that is wholly committed to You! I want to please You, having a strong faith, believing You to fulfill Your promises. But may I never be swayed when I feel disappointed - especially when I don’t get “my way, wishes or wants.” I love You... wholly, with all my heart!
