Who’s Measuring Stick?

John Tilton

Scripture

2 Corinthians 10:12-13

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you.

Observation

In defense of his ministry, Paul makes a clear fact that he did not compare or measure their call and service to God by comparing themselves with others, especially those who may boast of their works or accomplishments; but rather to their fulfillment of service to God as called and assigned.

Application

It is so easy to find one’s self comparing what we do with what others are doing or what they have accomplished, rather then our assignment and call. We often end up being “wanna be’s” as we watch others in their accomplishment or success, forgetting the part that we play and fit in the body of Christ and what He has called us to do including the gifts that we’ve been given. We often find ourselves seeking the accolades that others are receiving and measuring ourselves by others, rather then our service to God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, may I not look to others’ green pastures or trophies of accomplishment and accolades, but the part and assignment that you’ve called me to serve you and your Kingdom purposes. Please suppress my pride and carnal humanistic desires and aspirations for the call you placed on my life, even if it is in ambiguity.
