Scripture
54The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!” Matthew 27
Observation
Darkness fell across the land from noon to 3, an earthquake shook the ground, rocks split, the temple curtain separating the holy of holies from the sanctuary was torn in the middle from top to bottom, tombs opened and many godly people were raised from the dead: even the Roman centurions guarding the crucifixion were convinced that Jesus was indeed the Son of God. In Jesus’ time there were so many “facts” that proved Him as God’s Son. Today, the facts can’t be proven scientifically because there are no irrefutable records, and that is exactly God’s plan. Our belief in Him as our Savior and Creator can not be based on science and proof, it must be founded in spiritual faith. How much faith does it take to believe that fire is hot and ice is cold? Belief in science doesn’t inspire love and adoration. A “proven” all-powerful God could easily demand our loyalty and service, but our God wants our hearts. He wants us to have faith in spite of a lack of scientific evidence.
Application
I must be a man of faith, who follows the Lord no matter what the circumstance, no matter what the situation. I must look deeper than human evidence for proof of my Heavenly Father’s existence. An omnipotent and omniscient God is not limited by our science, our math, our physics – He created all things and all things come under His control, not the other way around. Proof requires no faith. Proof assumes that God is limited by our understanding and parameters; but He is not. This is a great reminder that I cannot and will not understand all of God’s ways, and that my faith in God should not be affected by man or this world.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You are beyond our understanding. You are unfathomable and inconceivable. Forgive me when I try to limit You to my box. May I follow You always especially in my ignorance. In Jesus name, Amen
