Never Alone Again

Jon Burgess

Scripture

45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice,“Eli, Eli,46Some manuscriptsEloi, Eloi lema sabachthani?”(which means“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

Matthew 27:45-46

Observation

For the first time Jesus could not feel the presence of His Father. For the first time Jesus understood what it meant to be abandoned and alone. A Holy God could not be near sin. Jesus took our sin upon Himself and faced the horror of the Cross. More then the piercing nails and hemorraging inside his body, the pain of facing this all alone would have hurt worse then anything happening to his body. He and The Father were inseparable. At the age of 12 he went to the temple and left Joseph and Mary to be at His Father's House. Everywhere Jesus went He would look to see what the Father was doing and do it with Him. Many nights he would get away with His Father and talk through everything- which disciples to choose, the loss of his cousin John, the pain of the Cross He was about to face. They talked about everything and now Jesus could hear nothing. The heavens were silent when He needed the voice of His Father the most. Why did Jesus endure this? So that we would never have to! Jesus was forsaken by His Father so we could be face to face with The Father. Jesus was abandoned so we would never have to have to face another moment alone.

Application

We may feel lonely at times but we will never be alone because of what Jesus has done for us. We will never have to face a crises alone because of Jesus on the Cross. The reality of His abiding presence is such a comfort especially when we are facing trials. Just this morning I was praying with my brother about His painting business and how Papa God was walking Him through each bid and account and conversation with customers. I was praying with my Dad about the surgery he is facing tomorrow. Tomorrow he will have his prostate removed and we talked about how God The Father was walking in to that operating room with him and would be guiding the surgeons hands. I was praying with my Mom who will need to have a biopsy because of a lump found on her breast. She has a peace because she is not standing alone. Today we are standing with our Savior. He faced the worst life could dish out all alone so that we would never need to.

Prayer

On the Cross Jesus cried out to The Father quoting David's Psalm 22. I have to believe that even though Jesus cried out loud verse 1, in His heart He was holding on to verse 24: "Sor he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help." Thank You for hearing our cries this morning. Thank you that You hold our days in Your hands and that every day I is lived out in the beauty of Your presence. The moment You found me was the moment You declared over my days- "No matter what you face you will never face it alone for My face is ever towards you."
