Be Humble or Be Humbled

Tim Savage

Scripture

11For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14

Observation

I’m very prone to being prideful. Slowly, but surely, maybe not externally, but definitely internally, pride wells up in my head and my heart. When that happens, I start to expect things of other people and I feel like I am owed certain things. It’s so insidious because it happens over time and quietly, then before I realize it, my attitude is rotten and I affect those around me. I expect the seat of honor, when I deserve the lowest place. Jesus shows us the choices here in Luke 14, either be humbled or be exalted.

Application

I must check my heart often and really examine my motivations. I want to be humble, but I don’t want to be humbled. The truest test of a servant is when you are actually treated like one. This is what I must diligently work on. How do I react when I’m treated like a servant? I deserve nothing. Now I’m not denigrating myself or expressing false humility, but in comparison to the Creator I am nothing and I owe everything to Him. There are many consequences to pride and I would rather change before I face those consequences. Unfortunately, it’s an on-going process for me; something I need to confront and battle time and again. It’s like rust on a car, seemingly insignificant at the beginning, but if not dealt with, will slowly rot you from the inside out.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please forgive my pride. Help me to change my attitude and serve You well.

In Jesus name,

Amen
