David: Christlike Love

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.” 2 Samuel 2:6-7

Observation

In v.5 - David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. One scholar notes that David’s motive for showing favor on the men of Jabesh-Gilead was not a political move. Often, kings would show favor to build alliances with neighboring foreigners.

I’m amazed, intrigued and inspired by David’s heart and leadership. His commitment to God and to show mercy and love a man who conspired to kill him is a holy response. There’s an interplay of characteristics between the character of David and Jesus. The qualities David demonstrates represents the steadfast love and faithfulness of the Lord.

Application

I want the rapists killed. I have revenge in my heart, thinking that a human trafficker would be given grace and forgiveness. Maybe forgiveness... - we all need forgiveness. But I would penalize the man or men, cut off their ”you know what“ and make them suffer! O God! How far I am from being a man like David! Enough said.... I have wicked thoughts and I need Jesus! Why do I think such cruel thoughts?

I want to live a righteous life and I expect people to behave, treatign others with respect - whether they are Christian or not. I despise the evil doer - yet I am one.

Prayer

God I know that in whatever instance I am personally involved in dealing with murderers, rapists, criminals... that You would give me Your heart for sinners. You extended grace and forgiveness towards me. Who do I think I am to act in a way of self righteousness - as if I’m better than... anyone? O God! I Need You! I Love You! I Repent!
