The Power of Faith & Unity

John Tilton

Scripture

2 Kings 4:1-6

The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

Observation

In this expose of the widow, the faith to follow in obedience from the Godly, and the contribution and support of others brought forth the fulfillment and abundance of oil overflowing. God could have manifested His power without her obedience and the help of others. However, we see a lesson of how God often works in requiring us to act forth as well as seek the help of others. One would think that all involved witnessed God’s miracle thereby being a testament to His power, glory and the miraculous.

Application

There is power and success when we are obedient to the Lord and Godly direction by those placed in authority or influence over us. There is also power and success when we must make the often bold move to ask the support and help of others, even when it might seem impossible and unlikely. Obedience in faith and unity with others examples the Gods power and plan where blessings can overflow.

Prayer

Dear Lord, may I follow in your obedience with faith even when 1 + 1 does not look like in will equal 2, and when I may be pushed out of my comfort zone to seek others help and support. May I see and understand those times where your glory will be exampled in obedience, faith and unity with others for a common goal or cause.
