Do I Really Believe?

Tim Savage

Scripture

21Then Jesus told them,“I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen.22You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”Matthew 21

Observation

These verses are both inspiring and terrifying.Jesus had just cursed a fruitless fig tree and caused it to wither. Why wouldn’t He cause it to bear fruit rather than kill it?The tree is a metaphor for His people. He won’t make us do anything we don’t want to, but if we choose to be fruitless in our lives then He will discard us in the end. Then He said that we can move mountains if we just pray and have faith.Do I have faith enough to move mountains?

A volcano on the Big Island started erupting yesterday and lava is spouting 100 feet in the air and rolling downhill burning everything in its path. Now that’s moving a mountain.Jesus is teaching us about faith. The Heavenly Father wants us to believe in Him beyond any doubt. He wants us to trust Him in all circumstances.I am terrified that He cursed the tree and it died, but I am inspired to know that anything is possible through Him, if I have faith.

Application

I am really good at trusting God when things are going well, but when challenges rise up, my first inclination is to try to fix it myself.I try to maneuver and manipulate the circumstances to benefit me.I need to learn to let go and let God.All of my manipulations amount to nothing, but God can move mountains.I need to give it all to Him – health issues, money worries, relationship problems; I need to give God all of my mountains because, if I have faith and I pray, He can move them. Here is the truly amazing thing, it’s up to me.God has the knowledge and the power to do anything, but do I believe that He can and that He will? That’s the question.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this lesson this morning.I can’t move my mountains, but You can.Lord, I give You all of my worries and all of my concerns.I control nothing, but You control it all.Help me to continually deepen the roots of my faith, so they become like anchors, immovable under any circumstances.May my life have abundant fruit and please You.

In Jesus name,

Amen
