They'll Never See it Coming

Tim Savage

Scripture

20The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk. Revelation 9

Observation

In the end times people will be so deceived by the enemy that even in the face of death and destruction they will cling to their ways and refuse to come to salvation. We are definitely seeing signs that the deception and depravity are at an all time high and we know that it will only get worse. Our country is turning it’s back on Christianity and the persecution is real. Those who stand up for their beliefs are ridiculed, lose their businesses and are thrown in prison and the people of the world applaud and cheer. They will not recognize the end even when the foundations of the earth shake and they are face to face with death.

Application

I have idols in my life that I allow to set my worth and direct my feelings. I have created gods out of the idols of success, recognition and acclaim. Lately I’ve anxiously awaited results from film festivals and other organizations, hovering over my computer to see if the movie has been accepted or won an award, jubilant in victory and depressed in rejection. I read a tweet today that smacked me upside the head. Tim Tebow, who is fighting for a place on the Philadelphia Eagles (pro football team), was asked if he felt good about his chances of making the team after having a particularly good pre-season game, he said that he wasn’t worried about what was out of his control and that he trusted God in whatever happened. That was a great wake up call for me.

I need to set me eyes on the only thing that truly matters, I need to worship Him only – not the little gods that tempt and distract me. If we win awards or are accepted by others then great, if not, it doesn’t matter, following His footsteps and will is all that’s important. In the midst of all that’s going on my eyes must be on the prize, otherwise I’m no better than those mentioned in the passage.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

May I have Your eyes so that I can see what You see, so that I can care about what You care about, so that I don’t get carried away with my own trivial pursuits but instead be about my Father’s business.

In Jesus name,

Amen
