The Power of Love

Ken Silva

Scripture

1 Corinthians 13: 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Observation

Paul is writing to the Christians in Corinth reminding them of “what love is” from God’s perspective. Love is at the core of our relationship with the father and each other.

Application

These passages of scripture are among the most popular and recognizable of all the verses in the Bible. We hear them at weddings, anniversaries, and special celebrations. We see it on wall hangings, bookmarks and posters. The central theme of love is so powerful that it is preached on and emphasized for the Christian walk. As we are on the backside of a very moving Easter weekend I find my thoughts focusing on two basic things that will make the Father smile. First to love him with all our hearts, minds, soul and strength. And secondly to love one another. The second is the more difficult of the two. That is why we are reminded to be patient and kind with each other. To show grace when we mess up. To not put each other down, but instead lift each other up with encouragement. To not keep a tally of rights and wrongs. To create a relationship of trust and security that is long lasting. To recognize the hurt anger can cause and steer away from it. To reject evil and rejoice in God’s Truth.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally. You've set the example for us to follow. I pray that I not take my focus off of you and the plans you have set before me. Dear Lord I am in awe of your grace and mercy. I thank you for loving me. Amen.
