Stay True to the Call

Tim Savage

Scripture

46Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared, “It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles. 47For the Lord gave us this command when he said,

‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles,to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’” Acts 13

Observation

I’m moved by Paul and Barnabas’ boldness and faithfulness this morning. Without regard to their own reputations and safety they stood in front of crowds, both receptive and hostile, preached the word of God and shared the gospel. They’re ears were tuned to God’s calling and they stayed true to His direction. They were part of God’s plan that brought salvation to the world outside of the Israelites.

I guess we have them to thank for our eternal lives! That is also an important lesson. We have been chosen as part of God’s plan of salvation, we choose whether to accept the calling and stick to it through calm or rough waters. It won’t always be easy, it won’t always be convenient or comfortable. God’s plan will come to pass whether we accept our part or not, He will simply use someone else, so we should accept His offer willingly and enthusiastically.

Application

Paul and Barnabas opened the doors to the world by hearing God’s call and relentlessly pursuing it. I have a tendency to want to move to those things that are easy, comfortable and convenient. I know that God wants me to be bolder, stronger and tougher for times ahead. I have to be willing to fight through adversity and challenges because that’s when true breakthrough takes place. I’ve found recently, that it takes remembering these lessons when I’m going through the challenge so that I can dig my feet in and fight, rather than fleeing or avoiding the conflict. I feel strongly that we will be called to be bold and courageous in the days ahead.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help me to have strength and courage, wisdom and discernment in leading Your people. May my life represent You well and be a shining light to those in darkness.

In Jesus name,

Amen
