In the midst of life

Ken Silva

Scripture

1 Cor. 7:32-34

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs-how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world-how he can please his wife, and his interests are divided.

Observation

The Apostle Paul describes the commitment of a married man to his wife and family. He refers to the normal affairs of being married competing with the time, energy and focus one has for ministry. Paul says that a "man's interests are divided" as he finds time for the Lord and also caring for his family. When we look at the entire chapter Paul seems to be saying, "stay as you are; if married stay married, if single stay single". As a believer the Lord will bless you and use you where you are.

Application

In the times in which we live there are so many distractions. As a husband and father of two kids in college I am well aware of the issues competing for my time and attention. I am in the world earning a living to provide for my family and educate my kids. I need to carve out time to spend with the wonderful wife the Lord has blessed me with. I need to be disciplined to ensure that I workout, eat right, and remain in fellowship with my Christian brothers. All of these things alone take up so much time. But with all that said, my priority must be to my relationship with the Lord. I must ensure that I give "my first fruits", not my left overs. I must make a conscious decision to spend time in the Word, in prayer, and in fellowship.

Prayer

Dear Lord I seek a closeness with you. I desire a loving relationship in the midst of the busyness of life. I am so thankful for who you are, what you have done for all of us and how you continue to bless us. Let my words, deeds and actions be a reflection of you living in my life. Amen
