Hitting the Jackpot - Seeking The Uncommon

Craig Peterson

Scripture
2 Chronicles 1:11,12 11Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king— 12wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.”
Observation
Solomon didn’t just choose wisely, he already had in his heart that he wanted to wisdom to rule well. As a result, God granted what was in his heart and the things he could have asked for, but didn’t.
Application
We’ve all done it. The Powerball Lottery jackpot gets into the hundreds of millions. In fact, I heard on the news that tonight’s jackpot may exceed 500 million dollars. What do we do. We imagine what we would do with that much money. We fantasize about paying off bills and mortgages; about never having them again; about walking into our pastor’s office and handing him a 50 million dollar tithe check. Wow, that would be amazing! That is the kind of thing that Solomon pondered in his heart. But Solomon knew that what he wanted more than anything else was to have what it took to do what God had called him to do well. He wanted wisdom to rule. So, when the opportunity arose, he stayed true to form and asked for it. God granted what was in his heart…and a whole lot more. It makes me think of Matthew 6, where Jesus just finished saying, don’t worry about what you will eat or what you will wear, that is what everyone worries about and spends their time trying to achieve. God already knows we need these things, so seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all the other things we need will be given to us. The bottom line, really trust God like Solomon did and allow God to take care of the obvious. That is how we hit the jackpot!
Prayer
Lord, would you grant me the things I need to be the man you created me to be? Not the physical provision, but the wisdom and patience and love and mercy and the uncommon things you value and use so greatly. Lord, I trust you for the provision of what I need to care for my family and myself. I trust you to provide the common and the uncommon, but help me to seek the uncommon by your grace.
