That God’s Will Might Be Glorified

John Tilton

Scripture

John 9:1-3

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Observation

As Jesus’ disciples asked him about the blind man thinking it was sin or something done that resulted in the blind man’s blindness, Jesus was quick to answer that His blindness was that God’s works might be shown. We often relate challenge; tribulation or suffering to something done wrong and that one is therefore experiencing punishment. However, although challenge, tribulation and suffering can be so tough, at times what transpires is to show God’s will, plan and mighty works.

Application

Our dear brother Robert was killed this past Monday in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. If Robert was seconds earlier or later in his driving home, he probably would be alive today. I couldn’t help but ponder … why? Why do dire things sometimes happen to good people? Why would a awesome family have to suffer through such sorrow unexpectedly?

I know that Robert was an amazing man of God, great husband, father with an amazing work ethic and many great relationships … loved by many. So why? Only God knows the answer. Yet, I rest in the fact that Robert’s life glorified God in so many ways and that perhaps it was God’s great love for Robert that he called Robert home as he led such an amazing life, whereby God called him to a place we all yearn to be … with our Lord. I, we will not know the answer until we see the Lord ourselves. However, I do know that I can garner some sense of understanding even in mourning that God’s will and love supersedes our understanding, and that we are encouraged to trust in His will and way.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for Robert’s life and the great example he has been his whole life, as you’ve grown him, matured him and lived through him in many ways that witnessed to so many people. May I remember are garner your ways and will that I witnessed in Robert.
