Steward What You’re Given

John Tilton

Scripture

Luke 16:10-12 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Observation

These scriptures follow the story of the shrewd manager who lowered other’s debts in an attempt to better his position and disposition with his master; the concept of keen stewardship, in this case of the world, but a lesson nonetheless. Thus, the continuance is that if one will steward what little one is given, one is trustworthy and capable of stewarding much more. Furthermore, the scriptures place the highest value on the ultimate riches of that which is from God.

Application

This is such a great reminder and prompting for me and for us who have the privilege to serve the Lord in ministry. Our stewardship in terms of what we do with what we are given is so important. Whether it be resources, gifts and abilities, or opportunities, how we steward it and what we use it for is essential. We will have opportunities and temptations to use what we have for personal or worldly gain or for the Kingdom of the Lord. We will have opportunities to invest in short term or long term matters, the shorter giving one short term or temporal gains, the longer giving one eternal gains. It is when we are good in stewarding what we are given, be it small, there will be times where the Lord will give us much to use for His glory.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for all that you bless me with in gifts and abilities, resources and opportunities. Please guide me that I will always be mindful to use it and steward it for your glory and not mine or worldly gain.
