What is Your Call & Role?

John Tilton

Scripture

Acts 13:1-3 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

Observation

As the church began, some were called to be prophets; some to be teachers and others to do the various works that God had called the leaders to do. They did church as a team way back then. Furthermore, they fasted, prayed and laid hands on those who were called.

Application

So it is with the church of today where people who are called are called to be slotted to serve God in a place that they are called to and gifted for. It is often more appealing and exciting to seek positions that are on the platform or with authority. Yet, it is the humble heart that is willing to serve where one is called, even if it is obscurity. It is so easy to want a position of recognition, rather then a position that provides a puzzle piece to God’s work.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please keep me from getting caught up in recognition, position or on the platform except if and when you call me. May I focus and be content with what you’ve called me to do in serving you. May my heart’s desire be fulfilling your call on my life, rather then wanting to be called to position and pride.
