Scripture

Hebrews 5:7-10

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitionswith fervent cries and tearsto the one who could save him from death, and he was heardbecause of his reverent submission.8Sonthough he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered9and, once made perfect,he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him10and was designated by God to be high priestin the order of Melchizedek.

Observation

Even though Jesus was the Son of God, and offered up prayers and petitions fervently and with tears to His Father, who could save Him; although He was heard, He still had to suffer through the torture and sacrifice. He learned obedience from what He suffered, and subsequently when made perfect, became our source of eternal salvation and was affirmed as the high priest for us all.

The fact that Jesus offered up prayers and petitions to God when being tortured and sacrificed illustrates His earnest hope to be saved. However, although heard, when He was not saved from His dire situation, He accepted His destiny in obedience. Mindful that He did not know the outcome of His resurrection to be and his place to become high priest, He was willing and obedient to sacrifice His life.

Application

I am encouraged that when facing trials and tribulations; to hold on to the fact that as I make my prayers and petitions known onto God, that He indeed hears me. Furthermore, that despite the outcome be in my favor or not, my obedience is what matters, and therefore I will be standing in His will. Likewise, although I don’t see the future, I know that He holds the future, and that He has the best plan for me.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I am encouraged in the way of obedience to your will, regardless of the circumstances and situations I face. I pray that in those moments, I will recall your faith and my subsequent act of obedience required and offered.
