Undivided Heart

Richard Waialeale

Scripture

James 4:8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Observation

The Bible often talks about the heart of a person. Often times the Lord tells us to turn toward Him.

How do we do that?

Well, one of the ways is through prayer. Another is when we sing or worship.

Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the prophet tells us God wants us to return to him with all our heart.
Jeremiah called this concept singleness of heart and action.

Ezekiel also spoke of God giving an undivided heart.
Only God can give someone an undivided heart, it’s not something we can get on our own.

David would often pray to God, “Search me O God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

And now James write for me to purify my heart and draw near to God.

Application

When I take one step in His direction, that’s when it starts. Whether I do it in my prayer time or when I worship Him, I’m turning my heart in His direction. I’m giving Him my heart, my undivided attention, I’m headed in His direction - and God is giving me an undivided, a singleness of heart - because I’ve taken that action step.

Prayer

Lord I pray for that heart to search You and You search my heart and know my anxious thoughts. Thank you for loving me enough to cleanse me into the person You want me to be. Amen.
