Smooth & Savory

John Tilton

Scripture

Colossians 4:6

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Observation

This scripture caught my eye in that it epitomizes and examples much of the contrasting things in life that can be good. I think of food for example where saltiness and sugar, or a sweet and sour blend in ingredients makes a great contrasting taste. I think of one of the keys in artwork where the contrasts of colors bring forth the beauty of an image. I think of the basics of hot and cold water that brings forth warm water that suits one’s desired temperature. So to that in our conversation and demeanor in our relationships with others, that it would be one of smooth grace and a countenance of loving rapport; yet may our content be meaningful, flavorful and savory like the seasoning of salt.

Application

At one time or another we may have had an opportunity to speak and converse with someone who had such a peace in his or her voice and presence. We then hear their words and we are blessed by the depth, sincerity, encouragement and meaningful words that they speak forth. The common outcome is our propensity to receive what they speak forth, often letting down our guards and wanting to continue in such a meaningful time. It’s like those times in my life where someone has spoken encouragement into my life, or even now when I hear my sweet grandchildren asking me something or telling me something with a voice of innocence. Hmmm … what an attribute and characteristic to have. What’s amazing is that I realize it is a possibility and attainable if what goes into my ears, mind and heart is good and of the Lord; so that what comes forth intentionally would be a voice of grace and hope with words and content that cause people to listen, receive and be influenced. May my countenance in my body language, sincerity in my eyes, words of grace and meaningful content touch those that I encounter, which if done, is their seeing Jesus in me.

Prayer

Dear Lord, guide me please to speak with words of grace that will carry forth words of wisdom, insight, encouragement, hope and resolution. May what I share be received as smooth and savory metaphorically like fine food of which its taste as been enhanced by the sweetness of your love and savory spice of your truth.
