Jesus Calms Our Storms

Tim Savage

Scripture
29“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. Matthew 14
Observation
The wind swirls and howls, the waves beat against the side of the small boat, tossing it this way and that, the rain pelts and the thunder crashes. Sometimes in life we face storms that threaten and frighten and turn our world upside down. Illness, death, finances, divorce, losing a job, bad life choice, addiction, crime – these and other situations are like storms that batter our fragile, little boat out in the vast unpredictable sea. There is One who controls the storm, One who controls the seas and we must just take His hand to experience the peace that only He can bring. The disciples were close to Him, they knew Him well, but in the midst of being tossed in dark and dangerous waters, even they forgot that Jesus was the Son of God, master and creator of the universe.
Application
Believers aren’t immune to storms. We will all face things that will shake us to our foundations. The loss of a loved one, a sudden change in our finances, we may feel like the rug has been pulled out from under our feet or that we’ve been punched hard right in our gut. “Who is that walking towards me in the waves, wind and rain?” “Take courage, I am here.” He says. Our situations don’t take the Lord by surprise. He knows our past, present and future. Only He knows what is best for us. There will be times when we need His comfort and hand of peace and there will be times when He needs to strike us down to bring correction and humility, but in all things we need only to reach out and take His hand so that He can say, “Peace, be still.” Jesus calms our storm.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, in the midst of the storm, we see You. Through the waves and the rain, we see You. Please take my hand, come in to the boat and calm the crashing waves. In Jesus name, Amen
