Undisciplined Children

Marsha Kochi

Scripture

2 Samuel 25:9-12
“The king said to him, "Go in peace." So he arose and went to Hebron. But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, "As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, 'Absalom is king in Hebron.'" Then two hundred men went with Absalom from Jerusalem, who were invited and went innocently, and they did not know anything. And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Absalom.”

Observation

David doesn't see the wickedness of Absalom, his son. Not only was Absalom disrespectful to his father, he deceived influential leaders of the community to join him in the overthrow of the King.

Application

I don't think my children are nearly as bad as Absalom or Amnon, but they got in their fair share of problems. I can see how David could be blinded to the things that his children were doing. Being inattentive and ignorant to what is happening with your children pays a price. Not having boundaries and supervision causes rebellion when correction finally comes. Authority figures are not respected and a very proud and arrogant view is taken when they deal with people in places of power. I'm guilty of always defending my children, I never could see the faults that were appearing at a young age. Whether it was the guilt of insufficient time spent with them, or problems of my own at the time, or my inadequate parenting skills, my children began to reap the consequences. The generational ramifications that were being passed down were obvious.
When coming to the Lord, I realized what a disadvantage I had placed upon them because of my lack.

Prayer

Father thank You for disciplining and showing me the err of my ways. I have learned through Your Word how important it is to raise children as you've instructed us to. In turn they can help their children in breaking the generational family curses. Thank You for bringing them to church, as I continue to pray for their total surrender to You.
