Trust God, Not Man

Tim Savage

Scripture

9The eyes of theLordsearch the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What a fool you have been! From now on you will be at war.”2 Chronicles 16

9So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.10Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.Colossians 1

Observation

We learned about Asa in 2 Chronicles who led his people in Judah in the ways of God.He did so much to restore the glory of the Lord in his country, but after all of the success and prosperity he enjoyed by doing this, he switched his loyalty away from God and to another king and army.It just seems to be the tendency of man to want to control his future and destiny.Asa put his faith in a foreign power instead of God and paid for it.“The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”In Colossians Paul prayed this powerful prayer over the church. He prayed for knowledge and wisdom so that they could live to please God.This is such a simple prayer but yet so profound. We will spend our whole lives trying to fulfill it.

Application

Asa is a strong reminder to me that one can live for Jesus but, at some point, turn from Him if not careful.Asa and Solomon are 2 examples who started so well but finished poorly.I want to finish well. And I will pray Paul’s prayer for the Colossians for myself and those that I love and lead.I will ask God for knowledge, wisdom and understanding so that I can honor and please the Lord according to His will.If Asa had pursued God’s will instead of his own he would have been remembered as one of the best leaders in Judah’s history, instead he was defeated in the end.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

I ask for knowledge, wisdom and understanding so that I can follow Your will for my life.I want to please You in all that I do.Please also grant me the strength and courage to follow You no matter what circumstances I encounter.I want to finish well.

In Jesus name,

Amen
