Seeing May Not Be Beliveing

Calvin Kochi

Scripture

John 20: 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

Observation

The well-known story of Doubting Thomas where seeing is believing. I think we can all relate to Thomas and yet fail to see that we may doubt more often than we think.

Application

I don’t think that I am a doubter like Thomas especially since faith is one of my stronger gifts. But I realize I may doubt more often than I would like to admit. I don’t think that I need to put my hand onto the side of Jesus to get confirmation. But do ask for a sign when there are major decisions need to be made. There are other examples like Gideon. He does the same thing but we don’t see him as a doubter. His response wasn’t a yes Lord here I am send me. He asked for a sign and even when one was given he wasn’t convinced. He asked for another sign. If faith is up there as my spiritual gifts maybe trust must accompany faith. It is in the difficult times that I must trust that it is Jesus and he will see me through those times, because he has give me the Holy Spirit to guide me to truth.

Prayer

Thank you for your Word. I know that searching the scriptures is what continues to build my faith and trust. Help me to continue to build the faith in those difficult moments.
