Lay With A Dog, Get Up With Fleas

John Tilton

Scripture

John 3:5-6

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit, gives birth to spirit.

Observation

Jesus was very clear that in order to enter the Kingdom of God, one must be know Jesus as their Savior by going through a spiritual rebirth, being cleansed by the Holy Spirit, and being led of the Spirit. This takes place when we spend time in God’s word and in prayer with Him. Thus, Jesus was teaching that if one spends time with the Lord, one would know the ways and will of the Lord. If one spends more time in the things of the world, then one would be drawn to the things of the world.

Application

There is a saying “Lay with dogs, get up with fleas.” It is so true that if we place ourselves in situations, environments and live our lives amongst things that are of the world and stepping-stones to sin, we will have the propensity to be drawn into those things. Thus, flesh gives birth to flesh. However, I know that if I spend my time with the Lord in His word, in prayer and amongst the body of Christ, the things of the Lord will be the desires of my heart, as those are the things that will take root in me. Its very simple; that which we let into our hearts and minds, will most probably influence in those ways and directions.

Prayer

Dear Lord, may I fill my life with things of you, rather then things of the world and distractions of life.
