Calming the Storms

Tim Savage

Scripture

24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Matthew 8

Observation

“What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!” It’s not a matter of “if” storms will hit us, it’s just a matter of “when.” The disciples followed Jesus on to that boat. They could not have been more safe or secure, after all they were with their Master and Savior, the Son of God who performed miracles. In fact, just before this Jesus had healed and delivered many people, but just after He had fallen asleep a storm suddenly came up and the little boat was tossed on the wind and waves. Many of Jesus’ disciples were fisherman experienced on the water, but the storm was fierce enough to terrify even them.

Storms hit us all the time – injury, disease, finances, sickness, relationship problems, work issues – often coming out of nowhere tossing us around, threatening our quiet, safe lives. It could be taxes, surgery or unexpected issues that cause anxiety and fear.

Application

Jesus faces our storms with us, we are not alone. We followed Him in to the boat and He has only to say the word and the wind and waves will be still. Our part is to have faith in Him, we have only to ask. Our Heavenly Father loves to answer our prayers, He delights in giving His children what they need. But He also knows what’s best for us because He knows what’s around every corner and we can’t see beyond what is right in front of us. Unfortunately, we can’t avoid the storms, but we can have faith that our Lord and Savior is in the boat with us and with Him we are safe.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for answering prayers. I love watching You work miracles daily. I love seeing things happen that only You could have orchestrated. I give You all of the honor and praise and glory.

In Jesus name,

Amen
