Vengeance is Venom

John Tilton

Scripture

I Peter 3:8-9

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

Observation

In these two scripture I am reminded that being in unity, sensitive with love, compassionate and humble is the resolution and peace of mind when I am offended, wronged or insulted by others; whether intentional or not, is the key to a healthy life with peace of mind. The natural and carnal response is often feelings of hurt that manifests itself in vengeance, which then becomes venom, leading to evil words and actions. It is a formula for disaster and more conflict. Furthermore, the scriptures also remind me that if I seek to be blessed, I must follow and be obedient in this way for vengeance is the Lord’s and conflict cannot be the bed for blessings.

Application

I know that there are times where others have hurt me, whereupon the immediate response are feelings and thoughts that are not becoming of who I am in Christ. Although I may not act out immediately in vengeance through words or actions, I let the hurt dwell within my mind, which does not quell the propensity toward thoughts of vengeance and possible wrong actions and words that ensue. I must be intentional to find resolution in remembering and acknowledging what Christ did for me in forgiveness and applying forgiveness to find resolution in my heart and mind; that I would not take on a vessel of vengeance and venom that can only result in conflict and disaster.

Prayer

Dear Lord, that you again for teaching and reminding me of your ways and will in dealing with my carnal DNA that I want to turn to a heart after you. Please guide me to quell and resolve hurts and injury quickly based on your example of forgiveness by what you did on the cross, and your Word that guides me through the challenges of life.
