Learning to Walk

Jeff Weinkauf

Scripture
Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a] and of faith in God, 2instruction about cleansing rites,[b] the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so.
Observation
My observation this morning is that I should be moving forward towards maturity. Young faith is wonderful and has an extra portion of faith given to help buoy those who are fresh in their belief. I think of it like a father helping his child to learn to walk. Holding onto small hands, ready to catch us when we trip over the edge of the rug. Laughter follows as he lifts us up again to continue learning to stand up, and then to walk. Eventually we do the “toddler dance” and move from solid object to object around the familiar, and of course in time we learn to walk as an adult. What would it be like if we simply chose to remain and not learn this important task of walking on our own. I picture a 40 year old sloth sitting on the floor with arms outstretched yelling “UP!, UP!” or “MORE APPLE JUICE”. Not pretty.
Application
Each of us should be actively learning what it’s like to walk, to mature, to grow. We can’t allow our selves to be static. “Oh that’s just old so and so” should not be allowed to be part of our vernacular. While we have grace for each other “that’s just how I am, take me or leave me” should not be a phrase I cling to. I am compelled because of what Christ did on my behalf to seek to become more like Him. To grow beyond elementary things to maturity.
Prayer
Please God help me to be more like Jesus, to grow and walk, to move past the elementary things. Amen
