Power Aligned

Jeff Weinkauf

Scripture

Revelation 10:1-7

1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”

5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. 6 And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, “There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”

Observation

The angel in this passage is described as mighty. His features are awe inspiring, his steps span the ocean and the land. When he roared like a lion the seven thunders answer back. This brief story is amazing, even terrifying. After this great demonstration of power though, the angel does not expect praise but rather rightly aligns himself under God. He swears not by his impressive nature, but rather he recounts God's attributes. God the one who lives forever, God who made everything, everywhere. The angel is not there to be great himself, but to set the stage and draw attention to God's purpose. His power demonstrated, is power aligned and under control, specifically under the authority and direction of the Father.

Application

Our status is God given. God may choose to wrap me in a cloud and put a rainbow over my head. In that moment though it's my role to explain myself in the context of God almighty. It's Him who lives and reigns for ever and ever. It's He who crafted everything, everywhere. I dont stand alone, I'm aligned under Him and His purposes. I'm here to accomplish His tasks. If I be at all great, then God be greater.

Although our tendency is to honor and elevate people we must remember that no matter how great we become, no matter how impressive we may appear, we must always use that attention to point people to God.

Prayer

Glory to God for ever and ever, amen.
